The Naked Nirvana Baby, 17 Years Later

From NPR:

Imagine if millions of people had seen you naked before you were old enough to say "embarrassing." That's the story of Spencer Elden, whom you may know as the little baby floating towards a dollar bill on the cover of Nirvana's 1991 album, Nevermind.

Nearly 17 years later, amid hating school and playing water polo, Elden is still struggling to make sense of his (very) public image.

"Quite a few people in the world have seen my penis," he says from his home in Los Angeles. "So that's kinda cool. I'm just a normal kid living it up and doing the best I can while I'm here."

Nevermind is often credited with changing the face of rock. Elden's naked participation in this important moment in music history was rather accidental; Kirk Weddle, the photographer working on the cover, was simply a friend of Spencer's dad, Rick. (Read more...)

Zombie Puppets

A Santa Monica studio called Three Legged Legs just finished a funky little music video/short film called Piece of Me, Piece of You that's available to watch online along with a generous helping of behind-the-scenes goodies. The short features some creepy-cool zombie puppets built by Adam Parker Smith and makes good use of Bunraku-style puppetry and wire removal techniques.

3 Albums I'm Listening To

Its been a while since I published a list of my top albums, so here is my top list for the first quarter of 2008! Anyone that knows me, knows I have very eclectic musical taste, and tend to favor songs with good beats or witty lyrics. These are in no particular order.

Yoav’s Charmed and Strange
The debut album for the Israel-born singer/songwriter creates beats with the help of effects pedals and the guitar.

Tall Hall’s Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum (Atlantic Records Re-release)
This Ann Arbor-based band mixes the qwirky humor of Barenaked Ladies with an satrical acapella flair. This is a re-release of their hit 2006 album. This version has cleaned up and remixed tracks for more awesomeness.

Vampire Weekend, self-titled
One of the first "blog bands" to utilize the internet to make it big. This New York-based indie rock band has an incredible following. Their sound is a strange mix of retro instrumentals with subtle hits of contemporary sound. Listening to them is like listening to a band you’ve heard years ago..but can’t quite figure out who.
